October is peak fall foliage season at Letchworth. Visitors come from throughout the region and beyond to see the waterfalls, gorge and spectacular fall colors.

On the busiest weekends, the number of visitors can be significantly higher than normal, which can result in traffic congestion, temporary traffic controls and changes to how vehicles move through the Park.

Plan for more time than you would during a typical visit.

Your hotel or dining reservation is confirmed, but your reservation does not control Park traffic conditions or entrance access.

Note that Glen Iris Inn is located inside Letchworth State Park, and it may take additional time than usual to reach the Inn from the Park entrance.

During periods of heavy visitation, the Park may manage traffic and redirect vehicles.

If you have a reservation, allow plenty of extra time to get through the Park and reach the Inn.  Make sure you have your overnight or dining confirmation and enter through the Portageville gate whenever possible.  With a confirmation, you are able to drive around the closure signs, go to the gate attendant, and they will let you through.

The Portageville Entrance is the normal access point for Glen Iris Inn, Caroline’s restaurant, the Museum, and the Middle and Upper Falls area.

However, traffic patterns and entrance access can change during peak periods.

Always check the latest Park information before you travel rather than relying solely on your GPS.

GPS can help with navigation, but your estimated arrival time may not account for traffic controls, temporary rerouting, or congestion within Letchworth State Park.

During peak October weekends, don’t rely on your GPS arrival time alone.

Our recommendation is simple:

Give yourself substantially more time than you normally would.

If you have a 6:00 p.m. dining reservation, for example, your goal should be to be at Glen Iris Inn by 6:00 pm—not arriving at the Park at 6:00 pm.

Yes. When visitation and traffic are high, Park staff may implement traffic management measures, including directing vehicles to different routes or entrances.

These decisions are based on conditions at the time and can change.

The biggest thing to remember is that Glen Iris Inn is located inside Letchworth State Park.

Your journey doesn’t end when you reach the Park entrance. During peak October weekends, traffic within the Park can add significant time to your trip.

We recommend:

• Checking Park traffic and entrance information before leaving home.
• Allowing extra time for your drive through the Park.
• Arriving well before any dining, event, or activity reservations.
• Keeping your plans flexible during the busiest weekends.
• Following all Park traffic directions and signage.  Remember, if you have your confirmation, it is best to go to the Portageville entrance and drive around the closure to the park gate, where the attendant will let you through.
• Avoid tight schedules that depend on arriving at a specific time.

If you have an overnight or dining reservation at the Glen Iris Inn, bring your confirmation and go to the Portageville entrance at 6849 Park Road, Portageville, NY. If the entrance is closed, carefully drive around the barriers, show your confirmation to the gate attendant, and they will allow you through.

Work backward from your desired arrival at the Inn, not simply from the Park entrance.

For example, if you need to check in at 4:00 p.m., don’t plan your trip around reaching Letchworth at 4:00 p.m.

Plan to arrive at the Inn by 4:00 p.m. and build additional time into your travel plans for Park traffic.

Be sure to have your confirmation and/or room key to be able to get back into the Park.

If you’re planning to leave the Park for dinner, shopping, or sightseeing elsewhere and return later, allow extra time for your return trip.
